How To Get From Hanoi To Hoi An

It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999 in Hoi An, a tiny town in central Vietnam. Known for its history, architecture, and atmosphere, it’s a popular destination for tourists.

That’s all very nice, and I’m sure you already know how worthwhile a trip to Hoi An is.

In other words, how do you get from Hanoi to Hoi An (or the other way around)?

Hanoi is a popular starting point for visitors to Hoi An. Many of the transfer routes are not straight, which can be perplexing for a first-time traveller. Instead, anyone planning on flying or taking a train from Hanoi to Hoi An must first fly or take a bus from Danang to Hoi An.

Only those who are willing to go by private transfer or sleeper bus can take advantage of direct transfer possibilities.

Don’t worry, you’ll learn everything you need to know to travel securely in the following paragraphs.

From Hanoi to Hoi An, what is the quickest route?

Plane travel is the quickest way to get from either Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. To Hoi An itself, there are no flights as Danang is the nearest airport to Hoi An. The flight from Hanoi to Danang just takes 1hr 15min. Hoi An itself is a 30- to 60-minute drive away from the airport.

Yes, you may take a direct bus from Hanoi to Hoi An.

You can catch a sleeper bus from the Hanoi bus terminal to Hoi An if you’re willing to sleep on the floor. Even if it’s fast, it’s not always the most pleasant mode of transportation. Although it is the most expensive mode of transportation in Vietnam, it is also our least preferred.

Is the train ride from Hanoi to Hoi An worth the time and money spent?

If you choose to take the train, you’ll be able to take in the countryside while you go. The 16-17-hour train ride is too long for my taste, especially when compared to the 1h15-minute flying time.

Please see the material provided below for more information about transfers!

Step 1: Hanoi to Da Nang Flights

Hanoi to Da Nang Flights

There are approximately 20 direct flights every day from Hanoi to Da Nang International Airport. (Note that there is no direct Hanoi to Hoi An flight option).

The airlines that service Hanoi to Da Nang International Airport are:

Vietnam Airlines,
JetStar Pacific (cheapest option),
Hanh Air Systems, or
Viet Jet Air.

Flying is a great choice for us because it’s a lot more convenient than taking a train. In comparison, the rail journey from Hanoi to Danang takes a massive 15 hours.

You’ll also be able to locate extremely low pricing. We discovered the best deals on JetStar and Viet Jet Air (between $20 and $35). Prices for Hanh Air and Vietnam Airlines (about US$90-175) are higher than those for the other carriers. Both JetStar Pacific and Viet Jet Air have flown us.

Step 1: Hanoi to Danang Train (or vice versa from Da Nang to Hanoi)

Hanoi to Danang Train

Traveling by train through Vietnam is an eye-opening experience. About 16-17 hours is required for a roundtrip train ride from Hanoi to Da Nang (or vice versa) (note there is no direct Hanoi to Hoi An train option). The beds aboard night trains are plush, and there is a vending machine on board for purchasing snacks and meals.

There are six daily trains from Hanoi to Da Nang on the Vietnam Railways. In the US, a one-way train ticket costs around US$20-30. A private berth on the Violette Train or Livitrans Express can set you back as little as $80-90 for a foreign tourist.

You should reserve your train tickets online ahead of time because they tend to sell out during peak travel periods. E-tickets can be printed or carried on a mobile phone or tablet and presented at the station while boarding a train when you order your ticket online.

You can either take a cab or a private automobile from the train station. If you don’t want to take a taxi (those drivers are insane!) to the bus station, you’ll need to plan ahead of time because it’s difficult to get there.

In order to save money, you can use your hotel’s shuttle service, but we highly recommend Blacklane Transfers for the ultimate in convenience. Those who drive in air-conditioned luxury are more likely to practise safe driving habits than those who don’t.

Hanoi to Hoi An Sleeper Bus

Hoi An to Hoi An by bus takes approximately 17 hours. The bus is the cheapest route (approximately $15-16) and the only way to get from Hanoi to Hoi An without stopping in Danang, so it’s a good choice for budget travellers.

However, sleeping on a bus isn’t the most pleasant alternative, but if you can doze off on a plane, I’m sure this would be an acceptable compromise. Although it is not our preferred mode of transportation, it is your only choice if you are strapped for cash.

Hung Thanh is the bus operator responsible for direct service between Hanoi and Hoi An.

Traveling by sleeper bus? Be sure to be to the station at least one hour before your departure time to get a good spot in line. There is no refund if you miss your bus because they are known to leave early.
